80 years have passed since the Temple was rebuilt.
Zerubbabel,
Ezra,
Nehemiah,
and Haggai,
The spiritual leaders have all passed away, and
Israelites' love and zeal for God have faded.
They expected their lives to be more comfortable and fruitful.
They thought as soon as they returned to their homeland,
the messiah would come at once and
make them rulers of the world.
But that did not happen,
and many became discouraged and careless.
Then God gave his messege to Israelites through Malachi.
But the people were surprised that
God found them wrong.
They no longer knew the difference between
the righteous and the evil.
